to the community, uplift others, and transform his life. Meet Darrin
Watkins, the owner of The Yard Guys Concrete Lifting & Landscaping,
Junto Taekwondo, and a rising music talent whose work reflects his
past and unyielding desire to succeed.

One of the most rewarding aspects of Darrin Watkins’ business, The
Yard Guys Concrete Lifting and Landscaping, is the transformation of
residential properties. Over the years, he’s had the opportunity to
repair and revitalize countless homes in Lincoln, leaving behind not

“It’s incredibly rewarding to know we’re making a difference, one
project at a time,” Darrin says. “The beauty of concrete landscaping
is that it’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces
that last and that people can enjoy for years to come. That’s
something that brings me a lot of pride.”
Whether it’s lifting and leveling concrete driveways or designing
elegant walkways and patios, Darrin brings the same passion for
craftsmanship and quality that defines all his endeavors. His work

Taekwondo: A Journey of Discipline and Personal Growth
In 2023, Darrin Watkins took another major step forward in his life:
he opened Junto Taekwondo, His story is especially powerful
considering his past. After serving time in prison, he was
determined to turn his life around—and that determination led him to
Master Scott Brown, owner and operator of Lincoln Taekowndo.
“I started Taekwondo when I got out of prison, and it was through
the support of Master Scott Brown, a local police deputy and
instructor, that I achieved my black belt and eventually opened my
own school,” he shares. “Considering my background and Mr. Brown’s
law enforcement career, we had a very unique relationship—one built
on mutual respect and a shared desire for personal growth.”
Darrin has now achieved the rank of 3rd degree black belt. His
journey through Taekwondo taught him discipline, perseverance, and
resilience—values that he carries into every aspect of his life.
Perhaps one of the most inspiring stories from Junto Taekwondo is
that of Josh Day, a student with Asperger’s syndrome who overcame
mental and emotional obstacles to earn his black belt and
participate in numerous tournaments.
“Taekwondo isn’t just about physical strength. It’s about mental
toughness, character development, and spiritual growth,” says
Darrin. “We’ve created a space where students of all ages grow not
only in their physical abilities but in their minds and hearts.”
Music: A New Avenue for Creative Expression
While Taekwondo and concrete landscaping may seem worlds apart, they
share one core value: discipline. This same discipline has fueled
Darrin Watkins’ passion for music, a pursuit he began during his
time in incarceration. Writing poetry and rap lyrics in solitude, he
never shared his work with anyone—until now.

“During my time in prison, I
began writing a lot of songs and poetry, mostly rap,” he
explains. “But I was always self-conscious, never showing anyone
what I created. Now that I’ve built my businesses and can afford
studio time, I’m finally able to bring my music to life.”
Today, Darrin has released several tracks on
platforms like SoundCloud, YouTube, and Facebook. His music is a
reflection of his journey—raw, authentic, and driven by his desire
to inspire others. He’s even performed at the Peoria Contemporary
Art Center, with the famous artist Preston Jackson as his mentor.
“Taekwondo has gave me the discipline and self esteem I needed to
pursue my music seriously,” Darrin says. “I’m learning how to juggle
my businesses, music, and everything else, but it’s all about
maintaining focus and pushing forward.”
Giving Back to the Community
What stands out most about Darrin Watkins’ journey is how he’s used
his experiences to impact the Lincoln community. His story of
redemption—of a young man who was abandoned by his father and
involved in legal troubles—demonstrates the power of passion and
mindset in transforming one’s life.
“My goal is to inspire others who might feel like they’re stuck in
their circumstances,” he says. “If I can turn my life around, I
believe anyone can. The key is having a clear purpose and
surrounding yourself with people who believe in you.”
Looking ahead, Darrin hopes to continue growing his businesses while
finding more opportunities to give back. He’s passionate about
offering mentorship to local youth and creating spaces where young
people can thrive, whether through martial arts, landscaping, or
music.
Inspiring Others: A Message to Aspiring
Entrepreneurs
For those in Lincoln who have a dream or multiple passions, Darrin
offers this advice: “It’s never too late to start. Don’t let your
past define you. With the right mindset, you can build a future
that’s better than you ever imagined. It takes hard work, but it’s
possible.”
As someone who manages multiple ventures while overcoming personal
challenges, Darrin encourages others to be disciplined, stay
focused, and use their unique gifts to improve their community.
“I want my story to be an inspiration,” he says. “I’m
proof that no matter where you come from, you can change your life.
And I want to help others do the same.”
Taekwondo Classes are held at 302 Broadway St, Lincoln IL in the
First United Methodist Church on Monday Tuesday & Wednesday evenings
6:30-8:00pm
