Prom night is not the exclusive
domain of teenagers in Lincoln. Adult Prom at the Lincoln Park
District on Saturday night was a hit with all post-high-school ages.
This year’s Adult Prom theme was Dance through the Decades, and DJ
Jon Young spun prom and party hits from the last 75 years for a
ballroom full of at least 60 dancers.
Dancers from Springfield, Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, and other
surrounding areas joined Lincolnites, all in their formal wear and
best dance clothes, to dance the night away just like old times–
minus any teenage angst or awkwardness. There was something for
everyone to dance to from Bing Crosby and Elvis to Michael Jackson
and Bon Jovi to Katie Perry and Bruno Mars. Young took requests in
case any dance favorite was missing from the music line up.
Catering was provided by The Daily Wrap, a local food truck owned
and operated by Steve Judd. Judd provided spring rolls, turkey BLT
wraps, ham and cheese pinwheels, teriyaki meatballs, potato chips,
and veggies. A fruit tray, cookies, and candy rounded out the
appetizers that were enough to make a tasty meal.

Prizes were awarded for the best
prom attire representing each decade and for best outfits overall.
Becky Strait, Lincoln Park District executive director, handed out
multiple gift cards for local businesses to the winners. Two prom
photo stations gave dancers a chance to capture memories of the
night. Dancers also had a chance to learn a new line dance part way
through the evening with some Travolta-move highlights.
Adult Prom is a fundraiser for the Lincoln Park District Foundation
which provides youth scholarships for LPD programs, helps fund the
community Independence Day fireworks display, and helps the LPD
preserve, restore, and manage Lincoln’s natural and recreational
opportunities.

Strait wanted to thank everyone
who attended. She said, “It was a great crowd. The event grew
from last year and we saw some new faces. There were people from
out of town, as well as locals. The food from The Daily Wrap was
delicious and they were great with set up and tear down. It was
a great night all around!”

The next charity dance Young will
host in Lincoln is a USO dance scheduled for November 7 in support
of Lincoln Community Theatre. It will also take place in the
ballroom of the Lincoln Park District and will feature a live swing
band. Young hosts charity dances around central Illinois for a
variety of non-profits. For more information about upcoming charity
