On
Wednesday, local veterans from the American Legion and the Marine
Corps League, sponsored by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Homes,
collected donations for Operation Honor Guard.
Veterans and Legion members, Vince Long and Lyle Johnson, were
stationed outside of Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln
collecting donations. Some donors would walk up to their station
while others would simply drive through and drop their donation in
the large blue bucket. Donors could also give by scanning the QR
code and paying with their credit cards. More Legion members were
set up outside Guest House.

Scott Turner, Vickie Hasprey, Jeff
Singleton, and Bob Solomon were collecting donations and taking time
to explain the importance of Operation Honor Guard to Guest House
patrons.

At Farm and Home, the Marine Corps
League was set up just inside the front doors. Jim Altig, Bill
Stauffer, Owen Eaton, Gene Hickey, and Maverick were working the
collection booth. Mr. Hickey introduced Maverick, the black lab, who
is a therapy dog. Maverick has a sweet and calm demeanor and
welcomes new friends.

Operation Honor
Guard was started in Danville, IL, by funeral director Rich
Darby. Through his business, he saw that his hometown Honor Guards
needed help replacing their mismatched, worn uniforms. The mission
is to assist Honor Guard members across the country with the cost of
uniforms and gear. This ensures uniformity in uniforms and gear when
honoring fallen veterans. The Day of Giving is their primary
fundraiser. There were similar events in Champaign, Danville,
Mahomet, Westville, Mattoon, Decatur, and Taylorville.
