On Wednesday, July 1, the Humane
Society of Logan County celebrated the 250th birthday of our nation
with a patriotic bake sale at the Lincoln Depot titled "Cookies,
Community and the Constitution."
As guests entered the depot, they
purchased a box for their cookies. There were two pricing options.
13 cookies were available for $10 to honor the 13 original colonies,
or a larger box could be filled with 26 cookies for $20 to honor the
26th Amendment. After purchasing, guests were given a pair of
plastic gloves and could browse a selection of over 55 types of
cookies baked by over 31 bakers in Logan County. Many of the cookies
had a patriotic theme that was explained.
Red, white, and blue pinwheel
cookies represented, founding father and second president, John
Adams and his vision to celebrate our independence with fireworks.
Many cookies honored first ladies;
whipped shortbread roses honored Axson Wilson, wife of Woodrow
Wilson, who established the White House Rose Garden. Vienna bars
were often served by Nancy Reagan at White House receptions and
Christmas parties.
The bakers also honored the 35th
President, John F. Kennedy, with Strawberry Cream Cheese Cookies.
Michelle Obama’s award-winning Shortbread Bars were featured, as
were Laura Welch Bush’s Cowboy Cookies, which are a nod to the
cowboys in her home state of Texas.
Other Presidents and First Ladies
who were honored included current President Donald Trump with Vienna
Fingers, Jimmy Carter, Thomas Jefferson, Ida Saxton McKinley, Martin
Van Buren, Grover Cleveland, Claudia Taylor Johnson, Dwight D.
Eisenhower, Jill Biden, and Betty Ford.
More cookies honored American
patriots like Paul Revere, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Francis
Scott Key.

There were even more cookies that
honored famous landmarks and events in American history. Broadway in
New York City was celebrated with the New York Black-and-White
Cookie. The creation of the Hershey Bar, the introduction of the
Space Program, the invention of Coca-Cola, and the 1923 World’s Fair
in Chicago were all represented with creative cookies. America’s
favorite pastime was also honored with a baseball sugar cookie.
Hawaii becoming the 50th state was
celebrated with Coconut Macaroons and Delaware’s statehood with
chocolate-covered strawberries.
Several cookies even represented
Logan County communities, with a Watermelon cookie representing
Lincoln, a Smiley face representing Atlanta, a Maple Bacon Chocolate
Chip Cookie for Broadwell, and a hare-shaped cookie for Elkhart.
There were several pet-themed cookies with paw prints and cat-shaped
cookies.
Shortly after the event began, Julie King performed an a cappella
rendition of "America the Beautiful." Her voice rang out in the
halls of the depot.
State Senator Sally Turner was
there to show her support for the Humane Society and gather goodies
to honor America. She is pictured with Logan County Board Member
Kathy Schmidt, Nancy Schaub of the Humane Society, and Lisa Drew.
Raffle tickets for several items
were available, along with information on pets available for
adoption. Just down the street, the Museum of Route 66 was open for
a preview. The museum crew is working tirelessly to ensure the
exhibits are ready for opening day. The museum’s grand opening is
set for July 11.
The Humane Society of Logan
County has several upcoming events, including the Rides &
Rescues Charity Car Show and two Culver’s fundraisers.
