Habitat kicks off home build number 28 with a Sunday afternoon dedication event

[July 28, 2025]

On Sunday afternoon, the Logan County Habitat for Humanity laid out their plan for a house to home renovation for Christopher and Desiree Nichols and their five children: Caleb, Camden, Cayden, Starry and Jaymason.

The family has been on the waiting list for a home for more than two years. According to HFH board president Jamie Voyles, circumstances have prevented the fulfillment of this dream for the family until now.

Habitat has purchased the house at 1034 North Monroe Street in Lincoln, and will do a renovation on the home, including transitioning the current garage into a fourth bedroom to accommodate the large family.

The Sunday event was a dedication of the work that will be done and included several litanies, scripture reading, prayer, and encouraging words from Lincoln Mayor Tracy Welch and Alderwoman Robin McClallen.

Tim Harmon of His hands Outreach provided the scripture reading that included Psalms 9:18, Proverbs 3:27-28, Acts 2:44-47 and Matthew 6:19-26 all of which are taken from the Millard Fuller Habitat for Humanity book “Love in the Mortar Joints.”

Voyles led the Litany of Purpose and Cince Bowns led the Litany of Promise.

Then construction remarks were made by Voyles. The construction leaders will include Justin Minder who was unable to attend on Sunday.

Welch and McClallen both spoke briefly. McClallen spoke of how she admired the program and felt that it was an excellent way to assist deserving families with homes they can enjoy for many years. Welch said that when he first became mayor of Lincoln he met with the HFH, encouraging them in their good work and opening the door to partnerships with the city that will help HFH secure homes and spaces for homes. Such a move is good for the families, good for the community, and good for the city with the impact it has on restoring neglected spaces into homes for families.

Laura Sandrolini introduced the couple and invited them to speak to attendees.

Desiree Nichols introduce her family. Her two oldest are 25 and 19. The next two are students at Lincoln Community High School and the youngest will start at Lincoln Junior High School this fall.

Christopher Nichols spoke saying that he was thankful for Habitat and the opportunity to own a home. It was something he never imagined would happen for him and his family.

The dedication ceremony was drawn to a conclusion with the closing pray offered by Cindy Taylor with His Hands Outreach.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers will begin working on the house in the very near future. There is need for volunteers whether it be skilled workers, those who can help with clean up efforts or anyone willing to bring drinks and snacks for workers.
