On Wednesday, August 5th, the
Department O culinary judging was held in the yellow door barn at
the Logan County Fairgrounds. Entries were being brought in for over
an hour before the 10:00 a.m. start time for judging. With the
exception of a single category, pecan pies, every category had at
least a single entry, with some having quite a few.
There were many people in the barn,
all of whom had submitted entries. Some faces were new, and some
were returning from years past.
Department O superintendents Marcia Greenslate and Janet Estill
greeted everyone at the start of the judging. They introduced their
volunteers, who included Sarah Dahmm, Tucker Roate, Brianna
Stazenski-Boatwright, Jaydon Miller, Kelly Haseley, and Judy Haseley.
The recorder was Linda McCuan, and the announcer was Ron Estill,
both returning to their roles over the last few years.
Greenslate and Estill also announced that this would be their last
year serving as superintendents of Department O. In an interview,
the pair shared that, while they enjoyed doing this over the last
eight years, they felt it was time to move on to something new. They
shared that for whomever serves as superintendents next, they should
know that not everything with culinary judging is black and white.
The judges this year both returned
from last year. Rose Harrold and Jamie Jones served as the judges.
Jones immediately got started tasting and judging the baked good
entries. These entries ranged from simple chocolate chip cookies and
brownies to decorated cakes and all manner of pies.
While Jones judged the baked goods, Harrold got started on judging
the canned goods. She took her time, inspecting each can thoroughly
and using a flashlight to get a clearer view of each’s contents.
McCuan would write down the names of the top four winners in each
category, if there were four, and Estill would read them off to the
crowd. After each first place name was read, the audience would clap
and applaud.
Dahmm and Roate got the baked goods
organized for each category, and then Stazenski-Boatwright and
Miller would get them on the table for Jones. These two also
unwrapped each of these items for Jones. Kelly Haseley would take
the top four judged items from each category to be placed in the
display cases by Dahmm and Roate.
Everyone had their job, and the team worked like a well-oiled
machine. The process moved along faster this year than in recent
years, with Greenslate even making the comment that they might be
done in “record time.” A break was taken for lunch around noon, but
everything was completed by 1:30 p.m.

There was an overall winner chosen
among the baked goods, and this was Shawn Halley’s best of show pie
in the Any Other Fruit Pie category. Jones stated that there were
several kinds of berries, as well as pretzels, in the pie, and also
described it as “to die for.” Halley was also awarded with a $75
gift certificate to the Lincoln Memorial Hospital Market.

Like with the baked goods, there
was also an overall best canned good that was chosen. This award
went to Kim Lyon for her plum jelly. Lyon was awarded a $50 IGA
