On Sunday, August 9th, the annual
youth livestock and project auction was held at the Logan County
Fair. This auction was held in the livestock show barn starting at
noon. Many kids came around to show off and have people bid on their
various animals. The barn was filled with people, some to watch and
others to bid. Almost all the money made from the sale of each
animal went directly to the 4-H’er who auctioned the animal.
The four auctioneers this year were
Dan Naughton, Reed Naughton, Ty Tucker, and Mike Maske, the latter
of whom shared that it was his 50th year being an auctioneer.
The auction kicked off with Raylee
Komnick showing off her meat pen rabbits. Her three rabbits were the
grand champion meat pen rabbits at the 4-H rabbit show this year.
After some bidding, Komnick’s rabbits were sold for $700. Her
rabbits were the only ones in the auction this year.
The meat goat wether was next, and
like the rabbits, there was only one. Talen Carroll showed off his
goat, and the Logan County Farm Bureau (LCFB) purchased it for
$1,300. The LCFB purchased many of the animals that were shown
throughout the auction. Additionally, Chasing Purple made many
purchases over the course of the event, as well as several other
donations at other 4-H events.
After the goats, it was announced
that they were going to be auctioning off the privilege of smashing
a pie in someone’s face, starting with the face of Chief Deputy Josh
Pharis. The bidding reached $600, with all the proceeds going back
to the program for the kids.
The next auction was to pie Steve
Nichols. This privilege went for $800, and a young girl got to do
the honors.
The auction then moved on to the
barrows. This was the largest category, with 26 pigs auctioned in
all. Coley Olson’s Yorkshire ended up being the highest sale of the
swine at $3,100.

Next was the presentation of the
Junior Department Carcass award from last year. It was announced
that Mason Short was the winner and was presented with an award.
One more round of pies to the face
followed. This time, whoever won the auction was going to get to
choose up to two fair board members to receive the pie. After some
time, the final bid came in at $675, and the winner was asked if
they wanted to double their donation to pie two fair board members,
and they did. The two chosen were Herman Schwantz and Kevin Kurtz.
The sheep were next, with seven
being auctioned off in total. The 4-H’ers brought their sheep out
one at a time, showing them off while the crowd bid. Luke Olson’s
grand champion cross bred sheep was the big winner of the day,
selling for $2,700.
The steer, which was the final
auctioning category of the day, were next. This started with Ryder
Conrady’s grand champion Hereford steer and worked through the other
thirteen that were auctioned. About halfway through the show, as
Tucker Garey was bringing out his Hereford steer, he was presented
with the Troy Miller Memorial Award.
The big seller, and the 4-H’er who
brought in the most money of the day, was Paxton Lora. Toward the
end of the show, Lora brought out his Maintainer steer, and the bids
started rolling in. They climbed to $3,000, then $4,000, and then
$5,000. After some time, the final bid was made at $5,800 by a large
number of buyers.
The last couple of steer were
auctioned, and that brought an end to this year’s project auction.
