Substance Use Prevention Coalition meets for updates

[June 12, 2026]  The Substance Use Prevention Coalition (SUPC) met at Lincoln Memorial Hospital on Thursday June 11 to share updates from partner organizations and ongoing initiatives. The mission of the SUPC is to promote awareness of substance use disorder, prevent youth substance abuse, and improve access to resources.

Members continue to pursue key informant interviews of parties who can provide insight into local youth and their attitudes toward substance use. Members have also been researching resources for schools to use based on requests from educators from the interviews. Potential resources include an Introduction to Motivational Interviewing course and substance use education through Indiana University website, Johnny’s Ambassadors website, Prevention First resources, and SPARK PHIMC Online Education Games.

The Memorial Health Systems region wide May Walking Challenge was a successful venture. Individuals were challenged to walk 50 miles during the month of May, and the five regions engaged in a friendly competition. The Lincoln team won with 50,247.8 miles walked. The individual winner from Decatur logged approximately 20 miles a day. Across all five regions of Memorial Health 175,318 total miles were walked.

SUPC is still trying to find the best date to bring Tall Cop to Lincoln and to secure funding for the summer of 2027.

After being approached by ROSC, Logan County Animal Control has expressed willingness to take care of pets while people go into substance use treatment when referred through the BRIDGE deflection program. Police Chief Meister has discretionary funds to potentially contribute to the temporary care of pet animals whose care may be a barrier to someone seeking treatment.

ROSC had a booth at Logan County Pride on June 6 and made 194 connections. They distributed free naloxone in new streamlined carry cases.

www.LifeUnitesUs.com is a website with a communication campaign around drug testing strips and other sensitive issues that are community health issues.

The next SUPC meeting will be July 9 at Lincoln Memorial Hospital at 9 a.m. and via Zoom. The next Community Health Collaborative is September 3 at LMH from 8:30-10 a.m..
