Obituary

Philip M. “Phil” Dehner, 81, of Lincoln, IL, passed away on Monday, December 23, 2024, at his home.

Phil was born on February 2, 1943, the son of Frederick and Mona (Lutz) Dehner. He married Connie L. Hudspeth in 1964, and they enjoyed their 60th year together this past year. She survives.

Phil is also survived by his children, Frederick (Kathy) Dehner and Michelle Dehner; grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Rakowski, Marissa (Blake) McKinnon, and Samantha Dehner; great-grandchildren, Abigail Rakowski, Mackenzie Rakowski, and Bennett McKinnon; his sister, Sandra Wheeler; brother-in-law, Charlie Marcy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Carl; sisters, Sharon Marcy and Sara Jane Murphy; and brothers-in-law, William M. Wheeler, Rick Murphy, and Robert Hudspeth.

Phil graduated from LCHS in 1961 and entered the US Navy in July; then returned home in August of 1973. He graduated Valedictorian in 1982 with his bachelor’s from Sangamon State University in Springfield. Phil spent 39 years as a Certified Financial Planner, retiring in 2024 from his Lincoln Edward Jones office.

In January of 2016, Phil underwent a double lung transplant at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He was so impressed by the nursing staff that he founded a trust fund for continued education needed by the nurses in the lung transplant department at Barnes. The fund quickly was matched and is now fully funded, fulfilling his greatest wish.

Phil had been involved in Habitat for Humanity, serving as president. He sang in the choir at Holy Family Catholic Church and the L.A.M.S. choir. Phil was a member of the Lincoln Elks where he loved playing golf and worked on the Elks Trust Fund. He belonged to the American Legion Post #263, where he led the Color Guard for years. He supported all arts, performing and donating to L.C.T. as well as LCHS’s Music Program.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, December 30, 2024, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lincoln. Visitation will take place the night prior on Sunday, December 29, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. Burial will follow the service Monday at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lincoln where full military honors will be accorded by The American Legion Post #263.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of Phil Dehner to the Dehner & Gopalaratnam Transplant Nurses Fund, checks payable to The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital; 1001 Highlands Plaza Drive West, Suite 140; St. Louis, MO, 63110; online at foundationbarnesjewish.org; or Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
