Obituary
Helen B. Opperman, 98,
of Lincoln, IL, passed away on March 1, 2026, at the
Cedarhurst Assisted Living Facility in Springfield.
Helen was born July 11, 1927, the daughter of Carl
and Katherine Leesman. She married Austin Opperman
on November 26, 1950, in Lincoln. He preceded her in
death on October 28, 1996. Also preceding her in
death were her parents, two brothers, Harold and
Raymond Pech of Lincoln, and a sister, Mildred
Wilmert of Lincoln.
Helen and Austin had a son, Dennis (Maribeth) of
Tuscola and a daughter, Diane (Dr. Frank) Aguirre of
Springfield. She enjoyed having four grandchildren,
Doug (Katrina) Opperman of Sherman, Brad (Laurie)
Opperman of Mahomet, Kathryn (Kyle) Vietzen of
Morton, and Ryan (Jenna) Aguirre of White Lake, MI.
She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren,
Henry and Sloan of Sherman, Barrett and Cole of
Mahomet, and Olivia, William, and Connor of Morton.
Helen grew up on a farm and enjoyed farm life. She
was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of
Christ in Lincoln. She worked as a nurse’s aide at
Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital for twenty-five
years. |

Helen enjoyed playing
pinochle and watching Big Ten College basketball
games. She was a member of the Oasis Senior Center
in Lincoln. She also volunteered for the American
Red Cross and at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services for
Helen will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6,
2026, at St. John United Church of Christ in
Lincoln. Visitation will take place two hours prior,
from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., also at the church. Burial
will follow the service at New Union Cemetery. In
lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Helen’s
name to St. John United Church of Christ or to St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Arrangements have
been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral
Home in Lincoln.
