Obituary
Geneva R. Gulso, 105,
passed away peacefully on Monday, March 16, 2026, at
Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, IL.
Born on November 28, 1920, to James and Amelia
Casstevens in Shelby County, IL. She was the second
oldest of seven siblings. She married Robert E.
Gulso on August 26, 1945. Geneva has three children,
Steve (Rosalie) Gulso, Donna (Rick) Wachter, and
Alan (Sandra) Gulso. She has six grandchildren and
sixteen great-grandchildren. Geneva is also survived
by her sisters, Esther Jane Ferguson and Nancy
Hinton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband,
Robert; siblings, Lois Lively, Daniel and Glen
Casstevens; as well as many aunts, uncles and
cousins.
Before marrying Robert, Geneva worked at the Joliet,
IL, defense plant assembling bombs during WWII.
Later, she moved to Detroit, MI, where she worked at
the General Motors Plant on an assembly line
building tanks. When her family learned of where she
was working during WWII, they would lovingly tease
her about being “Rosie the Riveter” because her
middle name was Rose. After marrying Robert in 1945,
they settled in Mt. Pulaski, IL, where she was
involved in their farming operation and raising
Shorthorn cattle.
Geneva was very active and a regular volunteer at
the Copeland Christian Church and later at the Mt.
Pulaski Christian Church. She was an active
volunteer at the Christian Nursing Home in Lincoln,
IL, for many years. Robert and Geneva also farmed in
Macon, MO, where they attended Crossroads Christian
Church. Geneva was a lifelong member of the American
Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Geneva enjoyed playing
pinochle all of her life right up until the last
days before going home to heaven. |

Lastly, Geneva was an
avid quilter. Each of her children received a quilt
as a wedding gift. Then during her active years in
retirement, she sewed many quilts as a labor of love
for all her grandchildren for their wedding gifts,
then for the births of her great-grandchildren. When
she became a great-grandmother, she became known as
our beloved “GG”.
She lived the past
nine years at Timbercreek Village Assisted Living.
She enjoyed the friendships of the residents and the
staff. She was especially fond of Dee Snyder who was
like an adopted daughter. The family wishes to thank
all the staff for their care while Geneva lived at
Timbercreek Village.
Funeral services for Geneva will be held at 2:00 pm
on Friday, March 20, 2026, at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
Visitation will take place one hour prior, from 1:00
- 2:00 pm, also at the funeral home. A private
burial will take place at Camp Butler National
Cemetery in Springfield on Monday, March 23, 2026.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Pulaski Christian
Church or The American Legion Post #447, Mt.
Pulaski, IL, in honor of Geneva.
