Obituary

Mary Louise (Mainer) Moss, 99, previously of Eagle Point Bay, Goreville, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home with family by her side at 11:20 a.m. on March 9, 2026.

Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Even though she didn’t quite reach her 100th Birthday, she was able to celebrate her 100th Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day, surrounded by the love of her family.

Mary was born on September 23, 1926 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the daughter of the late Jasper Floyd and Goldie Christine Mainer. Mary Louise married the late Arthur L. Moss on June 16, 1945 after he returned from World War II. She is survived by her six children: Sonnie (David) Alexander, Garry (Noryne) Moss, Arthur (Rose) Moss, Keith (Kim) Moss, John (Cindi) Moss, and Mary (Mike) Hampton. She leaves behind a large and loving family who will carry her legacy forward that also includes 27 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Arthur Lloyd Moss; her parents, Goldie Christine Mainer and Jasper Floyd Mainer; sister Alice; brothers Billy Mainer and Michael Mainer; grandchild, Philip Moss; and great-grandchild, Mila Moss.

They enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, and taking care of their Lake of Egypt home in Goreville, Illinois.

Mary was a homemaker through and through. She poured her life into her family in a quiet, steady way and never asked for recognition, but was felt by everyone who knew her. She loved deeply, and you never had to question where you stood with her.

Her faith in Jesus was the center of her life, and that faith is something she passed down, not just in words, but in how she lived every day.

She loved to read and write and never went anywhere without a stack of books. She was known for her wonderful cooking and homemade jams and jellies. Family favorites included her black raspberry, plum and peach jellies, homemade pies and her amazing apple dumplings. In addition to being a wonderful cook and baker, she always had the most beautiful flower garden which she cared for faithfully and got so much enjoyment from. She loved to play games, especially dominoes, and she almost always won!

A graveside service will be held at McKinney Chapel on McKinney Chapel Road in Marion, Illinois, on Saturday, March 28 at 10 a.m. A Celebration of Life for close friends and family to follow at Turner’s Table in Carterville, Illinois. PLEASE RSVP before 2pm on Monday, March 23 if you would like to attend lunch at Turner’s Table by emailing Mmossmemorial@gmail.com.

Flowers may be sent directly to the cemetery.

Mary’s life was one of quiet devotion, unwavering love, and deep faith. She will be missed dearly and remembered always.
