Obituary
Loren “Lornie” Arthur Westen, 91,
of Emden, IL, passed away peacefully on April 19,
2025, at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln, IL.
Born on May 20, 1933, to Andrew C. Westen and Rena
H. Bruns, Loren lived a long and fulfilling life
rooted in family, faith, hard work, and humor. He
proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from
1953 to 1955, then returned home to Emden and
married his beloved wife, Shirley Joyce (VanHilsen)
on February 19, 1956. Together, they farmed a Scully
Lease until his retirement in 1998. They were
married 60 years and built a life marked by love and
partnership until Shirley’s passing in 2016.
Those who knew Loren will remember his quick wit and
a great sense of humor that never failed to bring a
smile. He was a true outdoorsman, and a longtime
member of the Riverside Rod and Gun Club where he
found joy in duck and goose hunting, and fishing. He
was a member of the American Legion Post #506. He
loved tending to his vegetable garden, visiting with
friends and family, and watching the St. Louis
Cardinals. Loren and Shirley were faithful members
of Zion United Methodist Church until its closure,
after which they joined First United Methodist
Church in Lincoln.

nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Loren now rejoins his beloved Shirley in heaven,
along with his parents; his sisters, Fauline
(Alfred) Johnson and Agnes (Virgil) Marten; and his
brother, Christian Eldon "Bud" (Anna) Westen.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM,
Saturday, April 26, 2025, at Holland Barry & Bennett
