Obituary

Scott Bunner—son, beloved father, grandfather, and friend—passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, at the age of 58 following a short but courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by continuous love.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service, also at the funeral home. Burial will follow services in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Scott was born on December 2, 1966, to Thomas Bunner and Janielle Thompson Bunner.

Surviving Scott are his children, Kelsey (Tim) Mariah Matthews and Brock Thomas Bunner, whom he shares with former spouse Rachel Bunner.

Also surviving him are his loving companion Erin Smith; his grandmother, Marjorie Camp; his mother, Janielle Bunner; his brother, Todd (Gina) Bunner; three grandchildren, Barrett Matthews, Layton Matthews, and Arrington Matthews; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Bunner.

Scott lived a life full of laughter, love, and unwavering loyalty to the things and people he cared about. “Bunner” was a devoted fan of the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Fighting Illini, Scott’s passion for sports ran deep. But nothing brought him more joy than spending time with his three grandchildren. Whether he was playing baseball with his grandsons or doting on his little granddaughter, “Paw Paw Scott” found his greatest happiness in being a grandfather.

Scott was also a gifted woodworker, known for crafting meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces that will be treasured for generations. From handmade baseball bats to beautiful furniture and picture frames, his creations were not only a reflection of his skill, but of his love for making lasting memories with—and for—those he cared about.

Scott had an incredibly strong work ethic and tended to be a perfectionist. He worked at International paper for 18 years, with previous work in various construction.

He was known for his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor, Scott could light up any room. His strong-willed spirit, natural athleticism, and deeply kind heart left a lasting impact on everyone lucky enough to know him. He lived life on his own terms—with courage, warmth, and an unshakable love for his family.

Scott’s memory will be cherished always by his loved ones, whose lives are richer because of him.

Memorial donations may be made to the family ,in care of Brock Bunner, to assist with expenses and to purchase a headstone.
