Obituary

Gary L. Sympson, 69, of Waynesville, passed away at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington on May 25, 2025, with his family by his side.

Cremation Rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at a later date.

Gary L. Sympson was born January 8, 1956, in Lincoln, the son of Howard and Betty Garr Sympson. He was united in marriage to Gayle R. Cowan in Waynesville on December 1, 1979. She survives.

Gary is also survived by two daughters: Brandy (Jared) Mattingly and Sara Sympson; two grandchildren: Audree Miller and Brenley Miller; one brother, Eddie (Sandy) Sympson; two sisters: Sherri (Steve) Welch and Donna Sympson; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dixie Charron; one brother, Dale Sympson; one niece, Angie Sympson; and one nephew, Derek Welch.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, loyal friend and the unwavering strength of our family, he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless memories.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was a proud fan of Illini basketball, the Dallas Cowboys and the St. Louis Cardinals. He rarely missed a game and took joy in cheering on his teams. He also had a deep love for golf -- both watching it and playing a round on the course with friends and family.

Music was a constant companion in his life, filling his home and heart with its rhythm and soul. Whether it was rock, blues or something in-between, he had a soundtrack for every moment.

Gary had worked in the plastics shop of Eureka-Williams (vacuum manufacturer) and for Welch Custom Homes.

His family was his pride, and his friendships were deep and lasting. He will be missed beyond measure but remembered in the lives he touched and the love he shared.

Memorials may be made to the Waynesville Fire Department.

Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home of Atlanta is assisting the family with arrangements.
