Obituary
James Oxley Spellman,
83, of Lincoln, IL passed away peacefully in his
home on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
Jim was born on February 26, 1943, in Evanston, IL,
the son of Edward and Doris (Oxley) Spellman. He
grew up in Wilmette, IL, until the family moved to
Lincoln in 1953. He graduated from Lincoln Community
High School in 1961.
Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from
the University of Illinois at Urbana and passed the
Certified Public Accountant exam on the first try.
After college he joined the U. S. Navy, rising to
the rank of Lieutenant. He served as a shipboard
communications officer during the Vietnam conflict.
Jim worked as a CPA at several companies in
Springfield, IL, including Turnbull & Schussele
accounting firm and Mansfield Electric. He
generously helped family and friends with their
taxes.
Jim had a repertoire of entertaining stories,
including the ones about the sailor who jumped
overboard and started swimming to the U.S., mowing
all the trees his dad planted except two with flags,
and the absurdities in the US tax code. He enjoyed
traveling with family to Europe and Asia and prized
his Oriental rugs, furniture and artifacts. He also
enjoyed listening to chamber music and driving his
vintage Rolls Royce. He was meticulous in
record-keeping and kept track of the family
genealogy.
