Obituary

Mary Ellen Butler, 89, a Hoosier from birth, formerly of Indianapolis, Scottsburg, IN, Sarasota, FL, and finally Lincoln, IL, passed from this life on May 31, 2024. She was born in Harrison County, IN, to her parents Millard Logan Jackson and Mary Bigler Jackson on December 7, 1934. She graduated from Hardinsburg High School at the age of 16. She married her husband John David Butler on March 5, 1955 and together they shared 63 years of marriage.

She began her secretarial career, needing a work permit at the age of 16, in Louisville, KY, working for United Mercantile Agencies. When she turned 18, she moved to Indianapolis to work for RCA Records. After a hiatus from the work force to raise her children, she returned to work for Wolcott Printing Press and then Wavetek.

She was a member of Indian Creek Christian Church in Indianapolis, then Sarasota Christian Church in Sarasota, FL, then First Christian Church in Scottsburg, IN, and finally attended Elkhart Christian Church in Elkhart, IL.

She and John bought 5 acres of land on the south side of Indianapolis where they built a home, raised their children, and enjoyed a small farm life, raising their own beef and tending a one-acre garden. Mary enjoyed bowling, playing cards, traveling to all 50 states, and taking care of those in her care.

She is survived by her four children: Brenda (Bobby) Heeringa of Osprey, FL, J.D. (Pam) Butler of Hamilton, NJ, Mary Ann (Bob) Rea of Lincoln, IL, and Barbie (Skip) Hunefeld of Scottsburg, IN; her twelve grandchildren: Emily (Anthony) Cox, Stephanie (Paul) Kliewer, Lindsay Butler, David Heeringa, Meghan Butler, Hannah Rea, Bethany (Gary) Rademaker, Matt (Riley) Butler, Sara Campbell, Isaac Hunefeld, Eli Hunefeld, and Leah Hunefeld; and ten great-grandchildren: Jaden, Tyson, and Brennan Kliewer, Braxton, Milah, Raelyn and Hendrix Hunefeld, Lillian and Barrett Rademaker, and Charlotte Jo Butler.
