Obituary

Nancy Carole (Lehner) Olander passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2026. Nancy was a guidance counselor, a patient advocate, a homemaker and a strong supporter of Lutheran education, but the true joy of her life was raising her children and watching them grow into intelligent, kind and loving adults.

Nancy was born in Lincoln, Illinois, on January 20, 1949, the daughter of Leonard R. and Dorothy (Kollmann) Lehner. They preceded her in death. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln on February 27, 1949, and was raised in Lincoln, Illinois. She later lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Appomattox, Virginia; Beatrice, Nebraska; and Charleston, South Carolina, before moving back to the Lincoln area to raise her children. She resided in rural Beason at the time of her death.

Nancy is survived by her loving and devoted husband, the Rev. Charles Olander; her children, Sara Netzley of Peoria, Illinois; Christopher (Norah) Baker of Waterloo, Illinois; and Laura (Tyler) Bickel of Salt Lake City; and her grandchildren, Evelyn Baker, Eleanore Baker, Moira Baker, Lucy Bickel and Trey Bickel. Her husband’s children and grandchildren were very dear to her as well: Tamara White (Doug Newman) of Springfield, Illinois; Timothy (Anjie) Olander, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; and Erin Olander-Spain (Josh Spain), of Bloomington, Illinois; and grandchildren Samantha White, Luke White, Jackson Olander and Sophie-Grace Olander.

Nancy’s much-loved siblings and their spouses will also cherish her memory: Dianne (Bill) Breen and Randy Sue (Roger) Payne, all of Lincoln, and Richard (Dianne) Lehner of Bloomington, as well as numerous cherished nieces, nephews and their families. In addition, she is survived by Andrew (Sarah) Fiedler and their daughter, Johanna, of Rolesville, North Carolina.

Nancy graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1966, a year earlier than her peers. She earned an Associate in Arts from Lincoln College and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Illinois, as well as a Master of Arts in Counseling from Millersville University in Pennsylvania and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Illinois Springfield.

She worked as the patient advocate and discharge planner at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, a position she truly loved. In 1994, she began her career as a high school guidance counselor at Mt. Pulaski High School in Mt. Pulaski, Illinois, where she enjoyed being part of the students’ lives for 19 years.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lincoln, and served on many boards and committees over the years, most notably as chairwoman of the Zion Lutheran Parochial School Board. She had a special heart for Lutheran schools.

Nancy was a cherished wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, and those who love her will carry her warmth forever.

Services for Nancy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026, as well as one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the services at New Union Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
