Obituary

Joseph Brewer, 64, of Lincoln, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2026, in the comfort of his own home, with his loving family and friends by his side after a long battle with cancer.

Joe was born on November 5, 1961, in Decatur, IL, the son of Richard and Gloria (Beckman) Brewer. He married Laura Mitchell on April 16, 1983, in Lincoln, IL. They cherished their 43 years of marriage and were blessed with two beautiful children Cara and Mitchell.

Joe is survived by his wife; his children, Mitchell (Brittani) Brewer and Cara (William) Turnbull; his brothers, Doug & Steve Brewer. His 6 beautiful granddaughters, Maggie, Whrenli, Amelia, Audrey, Lhetti, and Isabelle. He is preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Brewer, and father, Richard Brewer, grandparents Ervin and Pearl Brewer, his in-laws George & Inez Mitchell, as well as his brother-in-law, Steve Mitchell.

Joe was, and remains, a steady presence in the life of his family and friends, with the lines often blurred between the two. Joe had a beautiful life, enjoying family, golf, Illinois Basketball, fishing, cooking, classic cars, walks in local State parks, and quiet nights on his patio with his family and friends. He excelled in all that he did; he is a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He retired after spending 35 years working in highway heavy road construction with R.A. Cullinan/UCM.

He served on the District 27 school board for 7 years and was the Vice President and the driving force involved in the new construction of the Central and Junior High school buildings. Joe enjoyed his local golf club and served on the Executive Committee as well as being Chairman of the Golf Committee. He was an avid golfer and earned four club championships at the Lincoln Elks Club. We are all going to miss Joe’s big smiles, infectious laughter and his positive outlook on life.

Due to his many happy years being a member of the Lincoln Elks, a celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Elks Lodge #914. Memorial donations may be made in Joe’s name to The American Cancer Society, Sarcoma Research Foundation, or Coaches vs. Cancer.

Cremation rites have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln.
