Walter Clayton
Smith, 87, passed away October 4, 2026 at his home
in Lincoln, IL.
Cremation rites have been accorded by Holland Barry
& Bennett Funeral Home. A memorial service will be
held at 11 AM on Saturday, October 17, 2026 at
Lincoln Christian Church. A time of visitation will
be from 10 AM until 11 AM also at the church. Burial
and graveside service will be at Riverside Cemetery,
Newville, Indiana at a later date.
Walter was born January 29, 1939, in Dekalb County,
Indiana, the son of Kenneth and Ruth (Walter) Smith.
He married Edna Anne "Eddie" (Baughman) in July of
1959. She preceded him in death on October 3, 2009.
Walter graduated from Kentucky Christian University
and later from Lincoln Christian Seminary with a
Masters in Divinity. He pastored a small church in
Concord, Kentucky before devoting his life to
Missions work in Nigeria. Walter was a missionary
from 1967 until he could no longer make the trip. He
was devout in his faith and read the Bible daily,
completing it yearly since 1969. He enjoyed walking
in nature, spending time with God, and was a member
of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.)
since 2005 and the Society of American Magicians
since 2019.

Walter previously served as president of the
Springfield, IL I.B.M. Ring 239 - The Lincoln Ring, which he joined in 2013.
Other interests include Duesenbergs, Abraham Lincoln, and orange strip pickles.
He leaves a legacy of faith, love, laughter, and magic. He will be lovingly
remembered and deeply missed.
Survivors include his children Keith (Nancy)
Smith, Jerianne (Timothy) Hyde; grandchildren: Matthew Smith (Samantha Montano),
Esther (Tyler) Turner, Elizabeth (Justin) Alvarez, Luke Smith, and Abigayle
Smith; great grandchildren: Matthew Cole, Alyssa, Willow, Owen, Shawn, Thalia,
Quinten, Ella, Eleazar, and Holland; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also
survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, grandson Stephen Smith, and
brothers Keith Smith and Richard Smith.
