Boyd’s 2 touchdowns power Southeast to 14-6 win over Railers

[September 06, 2025]
LINCOLN – A stingy Railer defensive effort wasn’t enough to negate a sluggish night for the Lincoln offense as Southeast quarterback Tony Boyd ran for a pair of touchdowns at the Spartans beat LCHS 14-6.

Head Coach Matt Silkowski

“We made some big plays defensively when we really needed to,” said Lincoln head coach Matt Silkowski. “They [the Spartans] went on that nine minute drive to start the game, and for us to get out of that with no points allowed I thought was a pretty good job.”

Unfortunately for the Railers, their offense didn’t ever seem to find its footing. According to unofficial statistics, Lincoln netted only 36 yards as compared to 339 by Southeast.

“We just struggled again offensively,” Silkowski said. “We’re just not getting any movement and we’re not displacing defenders, not creating anything for our backs consistently to make some plays. We’ve got to keep working on that and try to get more technically sound.”

The Spartans took the opening kickoff 62 yards downfield before losing possession on downs. Three plays later, Lincoln gave the ball back to Southeast when the Spartans intercepted a Railer pass with 1:17 left in the opening stanza.

Following a 10-yard run by Boyd on the first play of the second quarter, Southeast had a first down and goal to go from the Railer 1-yard line. The Railer defense made a stand, keeping the Spartans out of the end zone, but Lincoln went 3-and-out and had to punt on the following possession. That opened the door for the Spartans as Boyd found the endzone on a 12-yard touchdown run to open the scoring and give Southeast a 6-0 lead before halftime.

Paxton Lora

The Railers opened the second half with a bit more pep in their step, perhaps energized when freshman Paxton Lora returned the opening kickoff of the half 44 yards to the Southeast 42-yard line. Lincoln moved the ball downfield with a run by Colby Merriman and four rushes by Lucas Melton. On the sixth play, it was Lora finding the end zone on a 2-yard run to knot the score 6-6. Neither team scored during the rest of the quarter, so the tie score remained heading into the final period.

Following a Lincoln punt on the second play of the quarter, Southeast’s Boyd scored three plays later on a 17-yard touchdown run. The Spartans made the 2-point conversion to take a 14-6 lead. Lincoln had two more possessions in the final quarter, but the first ended in a punt and the second stalled when Southeast sacked Lincoln’s quarterback on fourth down, giving the Spartans possession with 1:17 remaining in the contest and effectively sealing the win for Southeast.

Lucas Melton

According to unofficial statistics, Melton led the Railers with 43 yards rushing, Quinten Mead added 16 yards and Merriman chipped in with 8 yards.

Hunter Clark

On defense, Hunter Clark led Lincoln with 4 solo tackles, including three tackles-for-loss. Preston Hunt tallied 3 tackles, and Leland Jackson, Marcus Gile, Mead and Lora added 2 tackles each.

The loss drops Lincoln to 0-2 on the season. The Railers are back in action September 12 in a 7 p.m. game at Rochester.
