Lincoln defeats SHG on Kill Cancer Night

[October 15, 2025]  The Lincoln Railers volleyball team hosted Sacred Heart-Griffin on Tuesday night for the annual Kill Cancer Night.

This year’s cancer honoree was Lexy Boyer, a student at Lincoln Community High School.

Doctors discovered Boyer had a brain tumor this summer and ever since her diagnosis she has been a true cancer warrior. Boyer is described as fearless, hilarious and completely herself.

Boyer has faced this situation with great courage. She even gave her tumor a name and an eviction date.

“Thomas the Tumor” has been successfully evicted but Boyer still needs to undergo further radiation and chemotherapy over the next year. Since Boyer is still on the road to recovery, she was not able to be in attendance at the volleyball game. However, her family did attend and they were recognized in the stands.

When the evening came to an end, the money that will be donated to Boyer reached $5,000. The amount raised was thanks to the joint efforts of the Lincoln and SHG volleyball programs and the many local businesses and families who donated items for gift baskets. Those gift baskets were awarded to winners via a silent auction. Many individuals also purchased t-shirts and 50/50 raffle tickets. In addition, Lincoln’s Locker donated their portion of the proceeds from the t-shirt sales to Boyer.

On the court the Lincoln players wore white jerseys with pink lettering while the Cyclones wore pink jerseys with black lettering. Fans also had on their “Together We Fight” t-shirts that featured a volleyball and the words “LCHS vs. SHG” on the front.

The evening started with SHG picking up wins in the freshman and JV games but it ended with the Lincoln Varsity team coming from behind to steal a two-set win from the Cyclones.

SHG won the freshman game 25-15, 24-25 and 15-7.

SHG won the JV game 25-19, 24-25 and 15-11.

Here is something interesting: According to the Central State Eight Conference volleyball rules, a team only has to win by one point when competing against each other in the conference matchups. So the above scores in a one-point victory are correct.

The Railer Varsity team beat the Cyclones 25-22 and 25-22.

Set one
The Cyclones took a 4-2 advantage early over Lincoln after a kill and a couple ace serves. SHG remained in front 7-5 after a kill by Lincoln’s Makia Hassebrock. Another kill by Hassebrock brought the Railers to within a point, trailing 10-9. SHG then used a 6-0 run to take the wind out of the Railers but with back-to-back kills by Hassebrock and Jayden Behrends, Lincoln was beginning to climb back in this one. Grace Bivin’s kill brought Lincoln even closer with the score now 16-14. Yet again the Cyclones pulled away, jumping to a 19-14 lead. When the score reached 20-15 it really looked like the Cyclones were going to put the set away, but instead SHG committed one too many mistakes and Lincoln was ready to pounce on them. In a flash, the score was 21-19 thanks to a number of SHG hitting errors. Following a timeout, SHG committed another hitting error and the Lincoln crowd was coming alive. McKenzie Payton stepped up with a big kill for the Cyclones and this put them in front 22-20, forcing Lincoln into a timeout. After the timeout, Payton went to the service line only to serve the ball really long and out of bounds, giving Lincoln a point they desperately needed. The Cyclones followed with another error that tied the set 22-22. The Lincoln student section that was camped in the far corner of the gym was on their feet and their energy really helped to distract the Cyclones. SHG made another hitting error and Lincoln was back on top with only their second lead of the set.

The first Lincoln lead was 2-1 and now it was the 23-22 Lincoln lead that really counted. With no timeouts left in the set, Lincoln was able to quickly put away the Cyclones after a kill by Hassebrock and a tip by Behrends. Lincoln steals set one 25-22.

Set two
The Cyclones will start this set strong and after back-to-back kills they took a 3-1 lead over Lincoln. Two kills by Grace Bivin kept the Railers on track, trailing just 4-3. The Cyclones were able to change that to a 7-3 lead in a heartbeat. Lincoln called a timeout after the Cyclones stretched the lead to 10-4. With Lincoln able to close the gap to 10-7, SHG took a turn calling a timeout. The score reached 13-7 before Lincoln got a point again. Behrends and Bivin were able to keep Lincoln afloat with their kills but the Cyclones still held onto a respectable 15-11 lead.

A long volley between the two teams ended with a kill by SHG’s Kendall Stotlar. Following a tip for a point in the next possession, the SHG lead was 17-11 and a third set was looking like a strong possibility.

Not so fast though. Lincoln was able to take advantage of more miscues by the Cyclones and with four consecutive points awarded to the home team the 17-15 score was starting to get Railer Nation wound up again. The crowd got really loud after a kill by Hassebrock made the score 18-17.

Hold the applause. There’s more to come.

Hassebrock was feeling it and she put down another kill to tie the set 18-18. This next timeout goes to the Cyclones. Upon the return to the court, Lauren Tedrick set Hassebrock again and she delivered. This kill by Hassebrock put Lincoln in front for the first time in the set and the fans were going crazy. Kallie Courtwright then came in to deliver an ace serve to give Lincoln a 20-18 lead. Just for details, Courtwright’s next serve would go long and the lead was trimmed to 20-19. Courtwright is a freshman and she was rescued by another freshman, Sage Gilbert. Gilbert hit the court, and the ball, with confidence while putting down a huge kill to give Lincoln a 21-19 lead. Perfect timing by the two freshmen.

After the Cyclones committed a hitting error, Lincoln got point no. 22 but then it was SHG’s turn for a point and the 22-21 score was a bit nerve-wracking. Behrends snuck in a tip that that changed the score to 23-21. Then it was Tedrick proving she can do that too. Tedrick snuck in a tip that left the Cyclones defense in shambles and put Lincoln up 24-21. Following one more net serve, this one committed by Lincoln, the Railers were in a good position for game point. SHG got the final serve and after several terrific volleys that featured some great hits, an amazing block and some unbelievable saves, Lincoln would earn match point when the Cyclones just couldn’t reach the ball for that second hit. As the ball fell beyond reach near the net, two Cyclones hit the floor in a near-collision and the Railers jumped for the rafters. That’s another 25-22 win that was truly hard-fought.

Lincoln really cranked up the offense at the end of each set and their defense remained steady to keep them afloat.

Makia Hassebrock honestly rose to the occasion and finished with 10 kills.

Grace Bivin, the freshman who has probably had the most Varsity time on the court this season, got down to business and handed out 7 kills.

Jayden Behrends was having fun at the net, pounding out 6 kills.

As usual, Lauren Tedrick was all over the court and she dished out 24 assists like it was light duty. She works faster than a one-armed wallpaper hanger.

It was just a resilient effort by the Railers to complete the comeback and get the win!

And how appropriate on a night when they pulled the community together to raise money for their classmate, Lexy Boyer.

Way to go, Railers!
