West Lincoln-Broadwell to play for state championship

[February 09, 2026]  The West Lincoln Broadwell Wolverines breezed through the competition on Saturday in the IESA 8th Grade Class 1A State Tournament at Warrensburg-Latham High School.

The Wolverines defeated Carrollton St. John 48-14 in the first round on Saturday.

The score was 18-6 after the first quarter with Griffen Cross and Kruz Froebe each scoring eight points.

By halftime it was 23-9 in WLB’s favor.

Carrollton St. John did not score in the third quarter and WLB extended the lead to 40-9.

Carrollton St. John managed just one field goal the entire second half and they ended up falling to the Wolverines by a final score of 48-14.

Griffen Cross led WLB with 20 points.

Kruz Froebe scored 19 points.

In the semifinals on Saturday evening, WLB took care of business, defeating Peoria Limestone Walters 54-21.

It is a similar story to the first game.

Griffen Cross poured in eight first quarter points to lead WLB to an 18-4 lead.

Limestone Walters failed to hit double-digits by halftime and trailed the Wolverines 32-8 at the half.

Cross and Kruz Froebe continued to pace the Wolverines in the third quarter and the lead grew to 47-19.

And how about a three from Brodie Glenn to lead the scoring in the third quarter for WLB. Brantley Conrady added two free throws and Cross added one more basket as WLB moved on to the championship game with a 54-21 win over the Rockets.

Griffen Cross led the team with 22 points.

Kruz Froebe tossed in 17 points.

WLB (28-1) will play Kewanee Visitation (19-2) on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 7:30 p.m. for the state championship of the 2026 IESA 8th Grade Class 1A State Tournament.
