Balloons Glow on Friday Night
[August 31, 2026]
Although they couldn't fly on
Friday evening, the pilots and crews put on a great show with the
balloon glow. After the sun went down, the temperature cooled,
making for a pleasant evening. The balloons were beautiful as they
illuminated the field in front of Open Arms. The field was lined
with excited spectators awaiting the okay to approach the inflated
balloons. Just after 7:45, and it was just dark enough to see the
glow of the balloons. After a countdown, the crowd was welcomed into
the field of balloons to wander amongst them, snap pictures, collect
trading cards, and enjoy the show. Among the pilots and balloons
were veteran pilots like the father-son duo, Jim and James Phelan;
they had their balloons set up to glow. Seth Goodman was there with
the balloon that he designed himself; Honest Abe features an image
of Abraham Lincoln, a watermelon design as well as the logo for the
City of Lincoln.
Reid Conklen was there with
Sunkissed, as he and his wife taught their son about ballooning. The
glow was made up of pilots inflating as needed and burning when the
announcer instructed them to twinkle or synchronizing with the beat
of the songs playing in the background.

As the glow ended,
the announcer instructed attendees to clear the field so the
pilots could safely cool and deflate their balloons.
