2026 Trick or Treat with the Mayor a Jurassic Park moment

[October 26, 2026]  Lincoln’s annual Trick or Treat with the Mayor event was held in and around the historic Logan County Courthouse Square on Saturday, October 24th. The event started at Latham Park, as that is where Lincoln Mayor Tracy Welch and his wife Annette Welch were set up, along with Administrative Assistant for the City of Lincoln Ashley Metelko. The Welches are always dressed in a themed costume, the last couple of years dressing as characters from Willy Wonka and the Avengers. This year, the pair were dressed as tour guides to the infamous Jurassic Park.

Upon seeing the Welches and Metelko, kids were given a goody bag of candy, and the adults were handed a map with all the participating businesses, departments, etc. The families would then leave the park and walk around the square and some of the connecting streets. Those that were participating included Lincoln Public Library, Lincoln Parents’ Center, Sir Renna Tea, Abe’s Caramel Corn, Ink & Imprint, Rio Grande, Lincoln Daily News, Heartland Bank, the Museum of Route 66, Foxhole Pub N Grub, Lincoln VIP Cinemas, Overstock Outlet, Small Town Creations, R & T Collectibles, Renew Consignment & Thrift, Missy’s Sweet Shoppe, GK Browne Electric, Experience Beauty Bar, Hoblit Law, Rusty Rail Pub, Prairie Land Title, Spirited Republic, Sherwin Williams, Tim Bacus Tax Accountant, Holland Berry & Bennett Funeral Home, Michelle Bauer Country Financial, Trinity Episcopal Church, Logan County Department of Public Health, Indigo Quilt Studio, Take 2 Consignment, Flossie & Delzena’s, Logan County Sheriff’s Department, Lincoln Fire Station.

Many of the business owners were at the front of their respective stores. The new owners of Abe’s were dressed as Willy Wonka and a popcorn bucket. Just down the block, the owners of Sir Renna Tea were dressed as characters from Star Trek. Some business owners had cool decorations. Kathie Williams with Small Town Creations had the Beetlejuice inflatable arch that she usually sets out. The owner of Sherwin Williams had a bucket of candy with an animatronic hand that would try to grab you if you put your hand in it. For the very little kids who were unsure of it, the owner had a separate bucket of candy for them.

Some of the business owners really got into character. The owner of Overstock Outlet dressed as Oscar the Grouch and had a small metal trash can that she kept her candy in. She would trick some of the kids by giving them pieces of garbage such as an empty Pringles container or an empty crumpled water bottle. She always gave the kids candy in the end.

Other businesses required you to go inside, such as ReNew. Upon entering, an employee would welcome the trick or treaters inside and come to the front of the store with a bucket of candy.

The streets were filled with plenty of trick or treaters and all kinds of costumes. There was a little girl dressed as an inflatable wiener dog. There were several superheroes, such as Captain America and Spiderman. Two young gentlemen were dressed as Michael Jackson. The kids ranged from the smallest babies still in strollers to upper elementary aged kids. Everyone seemed to have a great time navigating the streets and visiting the different stores and individuals handing out candy.
