The Waynesville Methodist Church
being the oldest in Dewitt County. In 1826, Prettyman Marvel and his
wife Rebecca Barr Marvel held church services in their home, 1/2
mile SW of the present village. The first church in the village was
organized in 1834. In 1849, a new two story building was erected. In
1884, a Revival was held and the crowds were so large that there was
fear of the floor giving way. A decision was made to erect a new
building and in 1886 a very plain frame building was completed. The
present church was built in 1916 at a cost of $15,519.98. It was
completely paid for on the day of dedication, 8/27/1916.
In 1968, the Methodist denomination
joined with the United Brethren and became the Waynesville United
Methodist Church. In 2025, a vote was taken by members of the
Waynesville UMC to leave the United Methodist denomination due to
the changes that were approved at the 2024 General Conference
regarding the Book of Discipline.

Later, another vote was taken to transition to the Global
Methodist denomination, based on our desire to stand on the word
of God. On 2/16/2026, we officially became Waynesville Global
Methodist Church. Our beliefs are biblical and we are holding
onto our Wesleyan roots. Our goal is winning souls for Christ.
There will be a historical display
of Methodism in the church basement on Saturday during breakfast and
pie and ice cream.
This Sunday, June 21, 2026, worship
service will be held at 9:15 a.m. Dave Taylor will be preaching from
the pulpit and Cheryle Taylor will be at the piano.
Everyone is invited to join us at
our 200 year celebration.
