Controversial issues:
As a

matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

For many years during a June Sunday
evening the public has been treated to a Concert in Latham Park by
the Lincoln Area Music Society orchestra. I have enjoyed each one ,
disappointed when one was rained out but never disappointed in any
performance. How many of those sitting around the area of the park
realize how many in that group spend hours of practicing, make room
in their schedule and individually practice to ‘get it right’ for
the performances. All too soon the last concert is this week.
I’m remembering how it all began in the early 1970’s when a District
27 music teacher had a vision. Helen Hannah invited ‘anyone who has
ever played an instrument to join her LJHS orchestra for a session’.
She and her husband, Lewis- (made violins), gave lessons, fine tuned
strings, put long stored French Horns, flutes clarinets and etc.
back in working order. Dr. Trapp brought his violin that he hadn’t
played in over 50 years – another brought her French Horn that she
put on a shelf after college-20-25 years before. Helen built a new
choir – moved one of my daughters from flute to Bass (the other
played violin) alongside her children and other students in her Jr.
High Orchestra. That Christmas the first Lincoln Area Orchestra
played a Christmas program at LCC Chapel, closing with excerpts from
Handel’s Halleluia Chorus.

Now some 50+ years later we enjoy LAMS
in the High School auditorium twice year and these concerts in the
park – something that only the larger cities in this country can
accomplish. Helen would bring out a piece she closed her chorus’s
program each spring – “Pass It On”! THANK YOU LINCOLN ORCHESTRA FOR
YOUR TIME, TALENT and COMMUNITY SPIRIT!!! As you close each program
with GOD BLESS AMERICA – Lincoln-Logan County is saying “God Bless
each one of you”.
