Lincoln Daily News
welcomes letters of appreciation, information and
opinion on matters pertaining to the community.
Controversial issues:
As a
community we need to be able to talk openly about
matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get
your point across is to stick to the issue
and refrain from commenting on another person's
opinion. Letters that deviate from focusing on the
issue may be rejected or edited and marked as such.

To the Editor:
Following our initial letter published on this website September
18th regarding the final, unappealable enforcement determination
issued by the Office of the Illinois Attorney General under Case No.
2025SW00017 against the Logan County Sheriff’s Department, we are
writing to keep the public on high alert. The public must recognize
that this designation signifies an active statewide enforcement case
file tracked at the state capital level. Public safety and the
protection of children are not localized interests; they require
strict, ongoing adherence to state statutory mandates.
What the community must evaluate now is the active wall of silence
that has followed these binding state orders. When parents from a
neighboring county address a local public body regarding verified,
state-confirmed constitutional violations involving a minor, the
public has a right to expect a transparent administrative response.
Instead, weeks after our detailed findings were made public, local
officials have chosen complete silence.
A local justice framework cannot
retain public confidence when it responds to binding state mandates
with an administrative stonewall. While local leadership maintains
total silence, the state executive branch has actively intervened on
the ground.

The Illinois Law Enforcement Training
and Standards Board has officially dispatched a State Field
Investigator directly to Logan County law enforcement leadership to
address the department’s ongoing failure to comply with the Attorney
General’s constitutional mandates.
With the Logan County Board now operating under its newly seated
leadership structure, Chairman J. Lance Conahan faces a defining
test of public transparency. The board holds absolute fiduciary and
financial responsibility for the county's law enforcement
operations, liabilities, and public standards.
Administrative silence will not erase the final rulings of the state
capital. Logan County residents and neighboring families alike
deserve clean, verifiable answers regarding how their leadership
intends to bring local operations into complete compliance with
state law.
Sincerely,
Lonnie & Robin Nichols
